Join the Impact! Rally this Saturday to Protest Proposition 8

Please join us this Saturday, November 15 for the “Join the Impact” Rally at San Jose’s City Hall.  We’ll be gathering at MCC at 9:45am, and then walking over to City Hall for the rally at 10:30am.  City Hall is located at 200 East Santa Clara Street (not far from the church).

If you’d like to help prepare for the rally, Craig Persons will be at MCC from 1:00pm to 10:00pm on Friday, November 14 making signs and banners for the rally.  He welcomes helpers – no prior experience is necessary.  Please call the church office at (408) 279-2711 if you’d like more information.

Please note: our Coming Out Support Group will be meeting this Friday evening at 7:30pm in the church as usual.  The banner folks will be using the sanctuary while the Coming Out Support Group meets in the church office.

Candlelight Vigil to Protest Prop 8 – Monday, 11/10/2008

Please join us from 5:00pm – 6:30pm on Monday, November 10, 2008 at MCC San José for a candlelight vigil to protest Proposition 8.  This vigil is being organized by MCC and the Council of Churches of Santa Clara County.

Please note:  MCC San Jose is located directly across the street from a mission center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons).  It is very important that our vigil be non-violent and law-abiding. If you feel that you cannot participate in a peaceful protest across the street from a Mormon center, please stay home.  We will not tolerate inappropriate behavior at our vigil.

The Council of Churches is also organizing vigils in other parts of the county on Monday night.  For more information, please visit the Council of Churches’ website.

What Would You Tell Someone About MCC San José?

At our Town Hall Meeting on November 2, we asked people to break up into groups of 3-4 people and come up with five things that they would tell someone who was interested in learning more about our church.  Here is what our four groups came up with:

A Pastoral Letter regarding the Proposition 8 Election Results

May the peace of God be with you!

After a long and grueling campaign, the voting is done, the ballots are in, and now we are waiting for the final results on Proposition 8.  Preliminary results show the “Yes on Eight” side leading by a slender margin, but there are still a great number of absentee and provisional ballots left to be counted.  It may be some time before we get a final vote count.

Here are three thoughts for you as we await the final results.

MCC San Jose creates two “No on Eight” videos

MCC San Jose released two new “No on Eight” videos on October 17.  Each video is about a minute long.  The first video is in English, and features ten ministers from Santa Clara County encouraging people to vote no on Proposition 8.  The second video is in Spanish, and features Rev. Francisco Castro speaking at our local Council of Churches’ October 16 press conference.  Links to the two new videos follow:

Special Time and Place for our Sunday, October 19 Service

Our Sunday service on October 19 will be at 1:00pm at the Walk for AIDS.  We’ll be meeting in the AIDS Memorial Grove in Discovery Meadow, located at the intersection of San Carlos and Woz Way in downtown San Jose.

Volunteers from our church will be staffing our booth, participating in the walk, and performing in the opening ceremonies, so we decided to move our church service so that everyone would be able to participate in both worship and putting our faith into action!

If you need directions, here is link to a map of the area.  By 1:00pm, there should be ample street parking in the area, but if you need other parking options there is a large parking lot at 401 S. Almaden Street (take the bridge at the northwest corner of the lot across the Guadalupe River to Discovery Meadow) and a parking garage at 333 W. San Carlos (enter on Woz Way).  Both lots charge a fee for parking.
